Overview
This policy describes the current Stillbook app for iPhone and iPad and this website. Stillbook is a local journal: you do not need an account, and we do not operate a service that stores or automatically syncs your journal.
The app does not include advertising or third-party analytics. We do not sell journal data or use it for advertising.
What stays on your device
The app stores your entries, diary dates, tags, imported photos, optional location information, and app preferences on your device to provide journal features. Search and filtering take place on the device.
Photos you import are copied into the app's storage. Associated media information, such as image dimensions and available capture dates, may be stored with them. Stillbook does not automatically upload this content to us.
Optional permissions
Photos and camera
Photo-library access lets you import images you select. Camera access lets you take a photo for your journal. These features are optional, and you can change permissions in your device settings.
Location
When you choose to add your current location to an entry, the app requests location permission and obtains the device location. The saved entry may include coordinates or a place name. Stillbook does not run a background location-tracking service.
To turn coordinates into a place name, the app uses the operating system's geocoding service. That service may process coordinates under the platform provider's privacy policy. Denying location access does not prevent you from writing entries.
Backups, sharing, and security
You can create a backup and choose where to save or share it through the system share sheet. A full backup includes journal content and media; a content-only backup does not include media files. Stillbook does not automatically send backups to us.
Backups are not password-encrypted. The app does not add its own encryption layer to the local journal database. Protect your device with a passcode and keep backup files in a trusted location.
If you choose a cloud drive, email service, or another app to handle a backup, that provider processes the file under its own policies. Your operating system may also include app data in device backups, depending on your settings.
Retention and your choices
Journal content remains in the app's local storage until it is removed or replaced. Restoring a backup replaces the current journal data. Uninstalling the app removes its local storage, but does not remove copies you saved elsewhere or backups managed by your operating system.
You control the backup files you create and the optional permissions you grant. Manage device backups and copies in cloud storage separately. We cannot access or erase copies held only on your devices or recover a journal without a backup.
Support correspondence and this website
If you email support, we receive your email address and the information you choose to include. We use that information to respond, troubleshoot the issue, or address your privacy request. Please avoid sending private journal entries or backup files unless needed.
We keep correspondence as needed to handle your request and related follow-up. You can contact us to request deletion of support correspondence; information may need to be retained where required by law.
This website does not use analytics, advertising cookies, or a contact form. Its hosting infrastructure may process ordinary request information, such as IP addresses and browser details, to deliver and secure the website. Email and hosting providers may process information needed to provide those services.
Children's privacy
Stillbook does not ask users to submit an age, create a profile, or upload their journal to us. If you believe a child has sent personal information through support correspondence, contact us so we can address it.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page when the app or our data practices change. The date at the top identifies the latest update.
